CURRICULUM INSTRUCTION IN TEACHING MUSIC
-
This class reinforced for me how Music and the Arts are vital in schools for pragmatic & aesthetic reasons. It also gave me added confidence in my abilities to teach music in a variety of fun and purposeful ways. We also completed the challenge of producing and acting in an online musical that we shared with the community. I was able to use my musical background to act as Musical Director for this as well.

NORTH AMERICAN INDIGENOUS LITERATURE

This course highlighted some Indigenous Authors and their books and gave us some insight into their culture, past and present, through Indigenous perspectives.
CHILDREN'S LITERATURE
-
This course allowed us to explore the roots of children's literature and the connections that original myths, folk tales and fairytales still have in today's culture.
THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL ISSUES IN EDUCATION AND SCHOOLING
-
In this class we took a deeper look at how social issues can impact education, and explored tools and resources for the classroom to assist in learning when children are impacted by these issues.
CURRICULUM INSTRUCTION IN TEACHING SOCIAL STUDIES

This course taught us about critical thinking and how to implement it in the classroom to enrich the learning of our students. We explored and created critical challenges for elementary students.
EFFECTIVE ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

In this course we looked at how to do effective assessment, as well as the different types.
EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS, SPECIAL NEEDS AND INCLUSIVE SCHOOLING

This class helped prepare me to teach a variety of needs in the classrooms and explore resources to support this approach including practice writing ISP's and Behaviour Support Plans.
CURRICULUM INSTRUCTION IN TEACHING PHYSICAL EDUCATION

This class showed us how to implement an effective way to teach Physical Education and the pedagogy behind it.
CURRICULUM INSTRUCTION IN TEACHING ART

This course showed us how to break down and teach the fundamentals of art, create meaningful projects with the students and the different assessment strategies for Art.
INDIGENOUS PERSPECTIVES IN EDUCATION
-
This course taught me various indigenous teachings and perspectives as and the importance of critically evaluating indigenous resources to make sure they are culturally appropriate. In this course did a passion project, where we designed and taught a First Nations, Metis and Inuit lesson in an elementary school classroom.
CURRICULUM IN TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

This class taught me how to effectively write a year plan as well as integrating ELA into other subjects. We created many lesson plans for different themes and taught them to our collegues. We also had that chance to experience an ELL classroom for 4 classes through Saamis immigration. It was a great experience that helped put into perspective the different teaching strategies required for teaching ELL students.

CURRICULUM INSTRUCTION IN TEACHING SCIENCE

This class taught me how to create integrated community classrooms for my students, combing science, math and language arts, as well as effective lesson and unit planning techniques. We worked with Praxis and put on the Family Science Olymics at the college which taught me a lot about how to teach students of all ages different science concepts in a fun and engaging way. In the pictures below, my partner and I did a lesson on Boats and Buoyancy.



CURRICULUM INSTRUCTION IN TEACHING MATHEMATICS

This class taught me how to effectively teach math in a variety of engaging ways to elementary students, including using the essential 6 in every lesson. The most valuable part for me was learning all of the different ways to teach math to differentiate for all types of learners. Another great tool we learned was how to effectively incorporate a rich math task into our lessons to deepen understanding and teach students how we use math in real world situations.
INTRO TO LINGUISTICS

This class was very useful in teaching how language and different letter sounds are created, the importance of proper grammer, and learning how to break down the parts of speech. This class helped to deepen my understanding of language and the importance of literacy.
EDUCATION PSYCHOLOGY FOR TEACHING

This class taught me a lot about child brain development and how it is connected to what you can teach students depending on their stage of growth.
ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION

This class introduced me to different theories and practice with physical education for people with impairments. I got to work with a group of students with varying impairments from a local school. Every week I got to do activities in the gym with them, and learn how to adapt those activities to suit them best. I also got to do my own lesson plan for one of the weeks, which was very rewarding. I learned a lot from my students, and they helped me to grow in my understanding as an educator.
INTRO TO MOVEMENT ACTIVITIES OF CHILDREN AND YOUTH

In this class, we learned how to teach a variety of skills and games to youth and how to adapt them to different levels. I planned and designed a bulletin board on the effect of technology on the brain with two other colleges, and designed a lesson plan with them to teach our class. I learned the importance of physical literacy in schools and how to implement it in a safe environment.

LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT AND LITERACY IN SCHOOLS

In this class, we learned about the importance of literacy in the classroom and the best ways to incorporate it to be the most beneficial to all students. Part of this class took place in a practicum at a local school where we got the opportunity to observe literacy practices and work with students on their literacy skills.
COMMUNITIES AND SOCIETIES

This class helped me to develop a deep awareness of different cultural systems within a society and to develop the critical thinking skills nessessary to unpack global stereotypes and create communities of belonging such as the importance of safe spaces
TOOLS FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING IN THE DIGITAL CLASSROOM

This class taught me how to use different forms of technology in the classroom to enhance learning. I was introduced to, and tried out many new apps such as Sutori, Kahoot, Flip Grid, Poll everywhere, and many other fun interactive apps. In this class we created a smart notebook lesson, learned how to blog and created an educational twitter account to help connect us to other educators on social media.
PROBLEMS OF PHILOSOPHY/ PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION

The biggest lesson I learned in these classes was how to open your mind to be able to see things from multiple points of view. I think that this is a valuable lesson that I can take with me throughout my life.
PROFESSIONAL DIMENSIONS OF TEACHING I / II

This class was taken in both my fall and winter semester and explored both the historical and the modern perspectives of teaching. It taught me the importance of classroom management and how to interpret the curriculum. We also learned many fun ways to use kagan strategies to encourage co-operative learning.
